In the position below, making the stronger point is enormously better, despite leaving a double direct shot instead of a double indirect shot. (The deck is somewhat stacked here since making the stronger point also creates a better distribution.)
One possible exception to the rule that a better point trumps better distribution may be when making the better point requires you to actually give up another point. For example suppose you have a 44 to play and, for two of the 4's, you have a choice between shifting your bar point to your 3 point and unstacking your 6 point to make your 2 point. Then I think it is often right to unstack.
