Nack, what do you rule in my hypothetical scenario? [NB: I've pasted it below, from the other post.]
Suppose the checkers are incorrectly placed on the 24-point and the 23-point at the start of the game, as in your game. The player wins the opening roll with a 4-1 and moves 24/20 without touching any other checkers. The other player rolls and makes a play and then they notice that something was wrong. How do we parse the position? The incorrectly placed checker on the 23-point is still there. Do we say that the first player illegally played 24/20 and it was condoned, and then move the checker on the 23-point back to the 24-point where it "belongs"?
Seems simple enough. In the same move, the first player corrected the improper starting position and played the move legally (as 41U, i.e., 41 played 24/23 24/20). Resetting is neither necessary nor defendable. (And even if in addition to that, say, a 6pt checker is found on the midpoint on one or both sides, the proper distributional adjustment is made and still no reset.)
Depending on the acuity of the second player, it may have been a courtesy or even proper etiquette for the first player to point out the illegal starting position to the second player, put the checker on the 23pt back on the 24pt to affirm the proper starting position and then play his 41U, but in any case I can't see either penalizing the first player or doing any sort of reset.
Nack
