Nack, what do you rule in my hypothetical scenario?

The term "illegal move" seems to me to be a nebulous term here. In Rich's situation, the move is not illegal from the actual position but is only illegal from what the position should have been. That means we have to answer questions like, "What is the correct counterpart of Move A [the move actually made], that was executed in Position 1 [the actual position], in Position 2 [the position as it 'should' have been]?" I believe that this question will not always have an unambiguous answer, especially if we give ourselves five moves to diverge between Position 1 and Position 2. I can imagine constructing cases where several alternate realities with various sequences of illegal moves converge to the same position after five moves. It may not be clear which alternative universe is the one we should revert to.
