A situation in a similar vein: I occasionally play with an elderly gentlemen (very small stakes) who frequently moves his checkers and then retracts his move, putting them back in the wrong place. Other times, because of poor finger dexterity, he messes up the position. Since we play over lunch and it's a friendly game, there are occasions when I'm distracted and I know the position he ends up with isn't the correct position but I'm not sure I can reconstruct it.

I know you all don't play with elderly gentlemen for very small stakes, but a similar problem could happen to you, and probably has. What's the solution? Start the game over? (What if you're way ahead?) Insist that your opponent accept your guesstimate of the original position? Let you have your choice as to whether to abort the game or play from his reconstructed position?

My friend is totally honest, but you can see the possibility of gamesmanship/cheating from a less trustworthy opponent: purposely messing up the board to necessitate aborting the game.
