In essence, all checker movements made stand if condoned as it can be assumed that the moved checkers began the game in their correct location and were then moved either legally or illegally to their current location. But any checker still in the same incorrect spot as when the game started may be returned to its correct location if noticed prior to the fifth roll.
This is an ingenious solution, but I can imagine ambiguities still arising. Suppose the checkers are incorrectly placed on the 24-point and the 23-point at the start of the game, as in your game. The player wins the opening roll with a 4-1 and moves 24/20 without touching any other checkers. The other player rolls and makes a play and then they notice that something was wrong. How do we parse the position? The incorrectly placed checker on the 23-point is still there. Do we say that the first player illegally played 24/20 and it was condoned, and then move the checker on the 23-point back to the 24-point where it "belongs"?
