The main difficulty, as I see it, with comparing chess and backgammon in this context is that the dice rolls in backgammon are not known ahead of time, whereas in chess the game is theoretically one of perfect information.
However, the following anecdote from the chess world may be interesting. I think I read this in Andy Soltis's book Karl Marx Plays Chess. Some tournament game between a grandmaster and a strong but clearly weaker player ended with a win from the grandmaster, and the players were analyzing the game afterwards. The grandmaster was freely sharing important insights about the position that the other player had missed. Then, unexpectedly, they noticed that an illegal move had been made during the game. The rules at the time dictated that they had to go back and replay the game from the point of the illegal move. Of course now the other player had all these tips from the grandmaster about how to play the position better. The grandmaster still won the replayed game, but you can see what a mess this situation was.
