"Fixing the incorrect starting position means moving the checker misplaced on 23 back to its correct place on 24. As it now has moved elsewhere you cannot actually do this physically, but it is easy to do mentally - just suppose it was originally on 24. Then the play made was 54: 24/14* illegal, but condoned. Play on."

This is similar in theme with Sam's statement. Though this interpretation hadn't occurred to me at the time, I am inclined to agree that this is exactly the right way to look at the situation.

In essence, all checker movements made stand if condoned as it can be assumed that the moved checkers began the game in their correct location and were then moved either legally or illegally to their current location. But any checker still in the same incorrect spot as when the game started may be returned to its correct location if noticed prior to the fifth roll.

In the case where too many checkers start on a single point we should assume that the checker that doesn't belong there is the last checker to be moved from that location. Thus if we begin with 4 checkers on the 8 point and play 8/5, we assume the checkers moved was one of the correct checkers and that one of the checkers that remain on the 8 point is the incorrect checker and has therefore not yet been moved illegally.
