I like the rewind, except go back 30+ years

Applying rule 1.1 (or whatever the director's wild card rule is), I rule the position and rolls stand the way they occurred.
I don't really see the logic of this rule in the first place. If you set the board up incorrectly and begin play, then you began play. Isn't that the way with almost every other situation? (Not quite -- the weird cube situations like turning the cube in the Crawford game and accepting a cube with the wrong value -- maybe a few more.)
Practically speaking, I think the cutoff could (logically) be the second roll of the game. Example:
A) Board is set up incorrectly.
B) Player-1 wins opening roll and makes his move (picking up the dice or hitting the clock, as appropriate).
C) If EITHER player now notices the incorrect initial setup before player-2 rolls, correct the opening position AND allow player-1 to replay the opening roll. But after player 2 rolls, it's too late to change things.
Finally, whether enforceable or not, it is both players' responsibility to call attention to the incorrect setup, and thus ethically required if noticed prior to Player-2's roll.
