There are at least two reasonable solutions that come to mind and you covered them both. The first option which is what you did Otb In the end, we simply agreed to cancel the game and start over. .

The second option and I believe my preferred option would be to allow the 62S-54? to stand and go from there, re-rolling the third roll. For the player to be able to play the 54 knowing your upcoming roll isn't an option. (esp. since it was his error in setup that caused the scenario)

A third option between known players would be to allow all the rolls to stand and just have the 54 played how it's supposed to be played. For example, if I was playing you Rich and somehow I was the dingus that set up the board wrong and then played 54R illegally, I'd find it acceptable for you to have me play X and you keep your 61. It's the play we all know I would have made and I couldn't care less about your roll.
