Very coincidentally, Steve and I went for a walk with a friend yesterday and told him about our trip to Louisville in 1983. We went together from Los Angeles, driving with my wife, Cathy. They had at least three divisions at the event AAA, AA, and A, they may have even had a beginner, I am not sure. I had 'graduated' to playing open events just prior to that and had intended to play in the AAA division, but upon being informed by someone, it may have been ED O'Luaghlin, that the equity in the AAA was very poor because they were awarding automatic byes to seeded players, I chose, like many other Open players that were not seeded, to enter the AA event instead. There were no skill restrictions between the two divisions, as I recall. I think the AAA had 40+ entries and the AA had 80+, mainly because of the many defections. Anyway, it all worked out well as Steve and I both won our divisions, a nice parlay of over 3200-1, if you consider us averge players in our fields. A good memory.
