Terminology

These terms are used in many different ways, including by me. But when I'm really careful I try to use them as follows:
Move: The movement of a checker corresponding to a single number rolled. (A mixed roll usually has two moves; a doubles roll usually has four moves.)
Play: The collection of all moves a player makes in satisfying the requirements of a roll.
Turn: One of three possibilities: (1) double, (2) take or drop, (3) roll, play, and pick up dice.
There are two definitions of ply. One definition counts rolls, the other definition counts plays. (Cube actions are not counted in either case.)
[IMO, the rolls definition of ply is more useful in backgammon. But other games like chess and go don't have rolls so the play definition is obviously what is used in those games. Maybe backgammon needs two words for ply: roll-plies and play-plies.)]
