Hey Mike,
Point taken about midgame blunders and there being much more to backgammon than openings, but opening plays occur every game, and little mistakes add up.
Why else is there so much discussion about opening plays ... well (a) because we have a new bot (XG) (b) some of us have new fast computers (c) rollouts of many 2nd, 3rd and 4th moves have never been done and (d) this part of the game is accessible to anyone with a computer for rollouts and a brain for memorizing (and understanding) opening play.
There are a few posts here and there but far fewer than all the posts on opening rolls.Actually, in the last three weeks, discussions about non-opening rolls have been the single largest topic. 56 non-opening positions, 25 opening/early game positions, and 9 OLM positions have been posted and discussed. ~14% of discussions threads have been about opening rolls, and ~30% have been about other kinds of positions -- ~%35 if the OLM discussions are included (they're almost all non-opening positions). It may appear that discussions of opening rolls domininate forum, but it's not so.
