does it really save a lot of time to invent all these wacky mnemonics and such, some of which are quite arcane, as opposed to just starting with A, B, C and so on all the way around the board?

I considered what you are suggesting, which, I guess, amounts to numbering the points in base-24. Once the points are memorized, there is no difference, of course; it doesn't matter what you call them. However, a "wacky" mnemonic system (particularly a wacky one) is much easier to learn and remember and that, of course, is an advantage. The people I shared the system with were able to learn the points immediately and recall them them days later with little effort.
