Thanks for the reference, Tom. That's a wonderful body of work on the opening plays. Were all these surveys all taken at the same time? In what year (or so)? Ah, memories.

The opening 62 survey shows us that D (Down, 13/11 13/7 -- played some in the swashbuckling 70s) was still favored by 1% in the mid to late(?) 90s. It was even played against me in 2006 or so (twice in the same match) by Nick Maffeo; he also played opening 53D (1.2% in the concurrent survey) in another game.

Nick, a chess master, has tremendous natural talent at backgammon, and was one of the finest players of the late 70s and early 80s. I am under the impression that he took a hiatus from backgammon during most or all of the 90s and then some. I feel certain that if Nick applied and modernized himself, he'd be considered one of the top players today.
