Andy Glazer wrote about both games in the 80s and 90s, and he had some success at both as a player.
He said, in print, that poker is the game where the skill gets the money MUCH more often than in backgammon. And he devoted himself to poker, until his embolytic death.
So opinions vary, or they used to. The correct comparison nowdays, at backgammon, would be between a player that has studied lots of neural net output, and a player that has studied none.
