More terrible play calling!

Situation: MNF Titans vs. Texans, 4th quarter; 17-17; 1:17 to go; both teams have 3 time-outs remaining ; Tennessee 1st and 10 at Houston 40. Play calls: 1st down, incomplete pass; 2nd down, incomplete pass; 3rd down, 5 yard pass, time-out #1 Houston.

The result of the above play calls was Tennessee, on 4th down, attempting a 53 yard field-goal with 52 seconds left, that if made would give Houston about 47 seconds and two time-outs to tie the game with a field goal or win it with a touchdown and if missed would give Houston the ball on their own 43 only needing a field goal to win the game.

Tennessee should have run the ball on first down. Right or not, it is very unlikely Houston would call a time-out. On second down Tennessee can evaluate the result of first down and determine what play to call on second down. They likely can get the clock down to 40 seconds or so after first down and have enough time, with three time-outs, to get into better field goal range, while leaving Houston very little or no time to respond.

As it was, Houston drove down the field and missed a game-tying field goal shorter than the one Tennessee made.
