I find it interesting that football (American football) and baseball, two of the most popular sports in the US can be quantified so much into number.
I was watching France against Samoa in Rugby today... never during the game statistics were mentioned by the commentators.
I've been living in the USA for 11 years now. I never got the felling from American people do that they do based on odds. On the contrary, I think that the greatest strength of American people is to be able to act on a hunch.
It is interesting that backgammon is totally driven by this very point: you have to calculate odds. Do you take a 4th down and 2 chance is close to deciding if you want to take a double a 23% winning chance.
I few random thoughts :
• I am surely not an expert in American football, but I would never have made that call in that position (note that I don’t have Bellichik’s record as head coach).
• American football is Rugby for sissies (sorry I had to take a shot at that).
• If anyone mention Thierry Henry hand in last Wednesday game against Ireland, I will not comment!
