Kit Woolsey describes this simply: When you opponent has a free drop you should never slot on the opening roll because you'll NEVER get to cover it. If doesn't hit your slotted checker, he'll drop the cube. If he hits, he'll be the favorite and be happy to take the cube.

BTW, happyjuggler's notion of trying to calculate what happens if your opponent forgets to cube at his first opportunity (the reversed score sitution) seems silly to me, as it will seldom happen.
