Slot, Slot, Slot

It sounds like you are talking about the first roll. This post is about the second roll. I am unaware of a change in style through the years that has altered the thinking on these second roll moves as a group. That's one of the points of the quiz. The slot versus split choice is often clear and the equity is not close. Nevertheless, many people are playing these move wrong or are confused in thinking that the choice is a matter of sytle. Rollouts for 52D-21 are never going to change. 64R-41 may. I am not going to worry about it in any event. My goal is to understand the dynamics of each move.
One of my Go books has a quote which I love. It is relevant to the study of Backgammon openings. It says:
Joseki scholarship (memorization of opening move patterns) = weakness
Total self reliance = strength
The idea is, THINK, don't play by rote. One can play by rote either by memorizing moves without understanding or just by playing thoughtlessly. While I would prefer memorizing to playing thoughtlessly, it is far better to understand. That's where a well written book or a sensei can make a big difference. Those trying to learn Backgammon openings are lucky in that both are available.
