I always recommend going through the Woolsey-Bagai match. It goes through all the important concepts as applied in a real situation. It is fun to read, and it is free to boot.

If one reads it thoroughly enough to understand and remember what has been said, then that person is ready to play anyone without making a fool of himself.

Then GNU and books and play and study etc etc
