Here is a position which has a lot of reasons to split. Responder faces an emerging priming threat. Splitting can partially freeze the checkers on the stripped eight point. It is correct to split with 41 and 51. But, the combination of checkers on the 11 and 5 is too compelling to split with this move. Note how well sixes play after the slot. Note how poorly sixes play on the other side of the board with 24-18 blocked. Slotting is best with 21.
In general, you are more likely to slot with 21 than with 41 or 51. If you understand the reason for the best play with each of these on the opening move, you will be better positioned to make the slotting vs splitting choice on subsequent moves.
