More on faith and science

I know Matt well so I knew what he was up to. I don't really understand Hume's argument myself but it sounds pretty esoteric, at best.
But there is a lot more that can be said about faith and science.
I just dont understand why a capable self-thinking human being cant be a tad bit more open minded to think for him/herself on the subject outside of what was drilled into their heads from childhood.
OK, is the earth round or flat? Ask this to a sample of the "educated" population and you'll get nearly 100% answer: "round, of course!". Then ask them for the supporting evidence... Similar on whether the earth moves around the sun, vice versa, or neither.
The *real* problem (IMO) is that we are taught (from childhood) to think religiously/authoratatively -- "because so-and-so said so; you wouldn't dare contradict him/her, would you??" Science is all about doubting everything and everyone, or at least idealistically it is. That's not what we're taught, unfortunately. Not even in most science classes.
It's all about controlling the masses. Many religions do a fair job of that. Most school courses do so as well. The fact is that those in power are much more interested in staying in power than to propogate open-minded thinking. Just ask a politician. (But don't expect an honest answer.)
