Petko has more of a liking for backgames than your average player. I see Petko play for money a lot so I'm not strictly speaking tournament play. I doubt he steers the games so much in that direction as the competition is probably more competent and tournaments are much different from cash. I can't argue with Petko's style, ppl who don't know how to play against backgames or any clue when to cube them it's well worth giving up minor bits of equity early on to steer the game in this direction if that's the way it goes.

I doubt Petko was trying to guide the games against Neil into backgames. You don't pick arguably the strongest player on the ABT tour decide to slip into backgames against him thinking you'll outplay him.
