So when we have one checker back behind a solid type prime that is threating to extend (or attack) and we have no real counterplay on the other side of the board it is almost always correct to toss that man into the outfield even if it leaves a direct, a double direct, a triple direct, a triple direct with two blots! In the beginning it's understandably hard to make such a move in positions similar to this one. It feels like we're intentionally putting ourselves on the bar against a three point board and four point prime. While that's true, it'll happen a lot, every now and again it won't. Even when it does is it really worse than the opponent extending his prime of which you are as far back as possible? (or blitzing you on some occasions)

A more simplified way of saying this is Pottle's Law

Now, the interesting part is if you headed over to Tom Keith's glossary you'll find that in the definition to Pottle's Law you get linked to one of my posts here on BGO! Here is the HTML link to that very post: When to run the back checker If you take only one thing from that post make sure it's the most important thing, that I called Sam a slacker ass.
