Backgammon in a painting from 1620's by Jan van Bijlert, called "Dice Players"

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jan_van_Bijlert_-_Dice_Players_-_NG.M.00091_-_National_Museum_of_Art,_Architecture_and_Design.jpg

I don't know why it's called "Dice Players" when they are clearly playing some sort of backgammon? Perhaps there wasn't an established name for the game yet at the time or perhaps it was called so to emphasize that it was a game of dice, thus a game of luck??

Any comments on the facial expressions or on other aspects of the painting such as what may be those three people and the black boy or where this may be taking place, etc...?

There is definitely intense eye contact between players. He is not even looking at the boobs, err at the dice and neither is she. I bet they move pieces without looking at them either. :) Only the spectator seems to pay close attention to the game. Enjoy...
