Aperiodic monotile

The three tidbits below may not be new to you, but they might be new to other readers.

1. For those who don't know anything about this topic, I would recommend the Up and Atom video as an excellent starting point.

2. While the "hat" tile made the biggest headlines, a followup construction called the "spectre" improved on the hat, because the hat tiles the plane only if you allow mirror-image hats as well. The spectre is an aperiodic monotile that does not require reflections to tile the plane.

3. If you want to dig even deeper, the Museum of Mathematics website is an excellent resource. For example, it contains a link to an unlisted YouTube video, "A Hat for Einstein," in which 3 of the 4 authors of the paper discuss their findings in detail.
