I guess the flip side is the newcomer question that I've heard quite a bit in my short time on the scene about "why isn't this perfectly readable die on a checker legal?"

I don't have a good answer for that.

Is it "because in fairly rare cirumstances we aren't 100% certain whether a die is leaning against the board or not?"

This seems overall simpler to me, not more complex, from a holistic dice rolling environment standpoint.
