I'm not so sure the idea of "moving the checkers away from the wall" is the best method to use as, in the case of the 3 in Ken's second set of photos, it seems like exacting motor coordination would be called for to ensure that both checkers are moved exactly in tandem with the same velocity (speed and direction). I'm not convinced just based on that photo that the 3 might not tumble down.
