Barry, I want to make it clear; as the current rules stand, I AGREE WITH YOU on your suggestion that we don't have 2 point matches.

I do believe, however, a better alternative is to apply Crawford at 2away/2away for the rest of the match and we will have a fun, interesting competition that rewards skill far more than the current 2 point mini-match and does not take advantage of the weaker player because of cube knowledge...however, the weaker play will be at an even greater disadvantage because there will be more games and more skill in checker play.

I do NOT believe that the overriding goal of tournament competition is to "protect" the weaker player at all. In events where weaker players can compete against far stronger players, like Seniors and mini matches and blitzes, of course the weaker players will be at a disadvantage no matter what the rules. The stronger players DESERVE to have an advantage...for the most part, and almost across the board, the stronger players have invested more time and work into the game.

The goal of tournament competition, including all side games, is to provide fun and interesting and exciting competition that ABSOLUTELY DOES reward the more skilled player most of the time.

As it stands now, the 2 point match is silly when you have reasonably-skilled players, as you said, and we should either change the rules or play 1 pointers.

I have another thought about side events. We play enough "regular" backgammon in the main event and consolation and last chance and blitzes. I think the best side events are really different and challenging and fun and bring more people to the game. I won't list them all, but Liars dice, skunk gammon, backgammon-to-lose, PaskoGammon, NackGammon, SlotGammon, are all fun diversions. Really want to make tournaments fun? Offer underwater gammon; a tennis tournament; a poker tournament; a chouette tournament.
