AB wanted to make one of his favorite type splits (21/20) in his opponent's inner board for several reasons he told me. For one, he felt that the 21 pt anchor was more valuable given the dynamics of this board than the 20 pt. Second, with blots on both the 20 and 21 points, the opponent's next roll may prove awkward and create an opportunity for a hit.

That notion seems to have some support when reviewing eXgam's list of the 5 best plays. Only one of them(3rd) moved the anchor to the 21 point. The top choice made the 21/20 split while playing 6/3, and the 2nd choice, 5/2 3/2, left the 21 pt anchor in place. And in the 4th and 5th moves the plays were also all in the players home board.

In the end AB told me he just couldn't get himself up for unmaking his 4 5 or 6 pt. That was costly!
