Backgammon is like a war and you are fighting for territory. You don't attack when your enemy is stronger than you, you dig in and wait for things to improve or keep from getting clobbered. And if your enemy is week, you go after him with everything you've got so he doesn't have time to recover.

Or as my friend Ken Bond always says when your enemy is drowning, "Step on his air hose."
