Or let's stay on the campus and switch our attention from the student-athletes who play football to the student-athletes who play basketball- where a selection committee determines the at-large bids in the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournaments. (I'll mention that this is the case for both men's and women's basketball before Madeline Albright tells me I'm going to hell).

On the men's side, in the current Big Ten Conference Standings- which is of particular interest to me, my being from Maryland, which along with New Jersey is the heart of Big Ten country- Indiana has already clinched the Big Ten regular season title with a 14-3 conference mark, thus assuring the best record among the fourteen teams in the Big Ten, but their RPI rank is 21, while three teams behind them in the standings have a better RPI rank -Michigan State with #15, Maryland with #12, and Purdue with #18. While all of these teams mentioned are a lock to get into Men's tournament, you can be certain that RPI will be used as one of the factors in the selection committee's decision for teams on the bubble.

What exactly have I proved here? Absolutely nothing. Which is the same as what will come out of all of this discussion of who the best players are. We might as well be arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. We'll accomplish just as much.
