The first time I was offered balut it was obvious something was up. The lady was selling the out of a cardboard box, and the eggs look black and rotten.

In any event, I hate eggs. That may be too strongly put. As a mature adult I can barely tolerate them. They don't bother me when mixed, as in a cake. In chunks in a fried rice? Yeah, I'll live. But a regular egg, fried, scrambled, boiled (I have tried them ever way you could think of): yuck!

As a kid my mom thought eggs were part of a healthy diet. The edict came down: once a week, you will eat eggs. Egg Day was Sunday, also the day I was forced to go to Sunday School. Eggs may be one reason I am an atheist today. ;-)

So I had no trouble resisting balut.

I have tried pretty much everything else: snake, snake blood, dog, scorpion, giant cockroach, fish head, live octopus ...

Only one that was really terrible was silk worm larva. That one is four-dimensionally awful: Looks, Texture, Taste, and as a Concept. Of those four the texture is worse than you can imagine, but the taste is positively Lovecraftian.
