Let the probability of success on a single roll = p
In a large number of rolls, n, you will have np successes.
Average rolls = total rolls / successes = n / np = 1/p.
When p = 11/36, the probability of rolling the one number which enters from the bar, the average = 36/11 = 3.27.
Like most questions, it was answered over 30 years ago by Danny Kleinman. An alternative proof is given in Walter Trice's Backgammon Boot Camp.
