Any answer to any question (here or elsewhere) which involves assumptions requires that one understand the limitations of the assumptions.
You are assuming (and I have no reason to doubt it) that your opponent is weak with the doubling cube. What are you assuming about his checker play?
I suppose there are players out there (e.g. from the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East) who are among the world's best at cubeless checkerplay but hopeless (because they've never learned) handling the cube. However, to assume this is your opponent seems to me to be unrealistic.
In your second position (or even ones with not such a razor thin take), the standard thought process is "my opponent is much less likely to err here in the bearin & bearoff than in a game played from the beginning." To be more quantitative, I recommend Jake's book. (And even if you buy the wrong one, you'll still learn something. :)
