Playing doublets once each instead of twice

With regard to the game of Irish, looking at the summary box of the differences to bg, seems that there might be more important reasons why that game went the way it did; the lack of gammons and bg's for a start. But, as I implied, I don't advocate playing doublets only once, I merely feel it probably helps the weaker player win more games.
It seems to me that having 4 choices rather than 2 is quite often simpler; an opening 66 is a classic example. But, even if, on balance, it does complicate the game, you still have to weigh that against the fact that doublets are usually powerful rolls, and they therefore give the weaker player more access to the jokers they need to turn the tables. This is true in positional games or a pure race. In the latter, the player who leads when the two armies pass each other will tend to be the better player of course: making doublets count double reduces their probability of staying in front.
But it's been bg for centuries, and I long ago lost my desire to see it changed.
