Playing doublets once each instead of twice

I still reckon that, on balance, counting all doublets at face value probably increases the win % of higher rated players ...
I would have thought the opposite -- that it's the rolls of doublets that set apart the Big Boys from the rest of us. Isn't it a lot harder to play four numbers than two?
This suggestion, to play doublets once instead of twice, is probably the most frequently proposed "improvement" to backgammon's Basic Rules, but I suspect it was this very rule (playing doublets twice) that lead to backgammon's popularity over other games of tables. (Compare, for example, the game of Irish, which has pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird.)
