tinyurl is not your friend!

In Response To: New Backgammon Book suggestion ? (Stick)

There are many good reasons not to use a URL shortener such as tinyurl.

In its article on URL shortening, Wikipedia has this to say (among other things):

  • Privacy and security: Users may be exposed to privacy issues through a URL shortening service's ability to track a user's behavior across many domains.
  • Wikipedia does not accept links by any URL shortening services in its articles.
And in the article dedicated to tinyurl specifically, there is this:
  • The TinyURL service, like other public URL shortener services, can be used by spammers and affiliate marketers to hide URLs that would otherwise cause their messages to be blocked by spam filters. TinyURL's home page includes text that explicitly encourages and recommends the use of its service to hide affiliate links. This page solicits donations, and does not have a 'report abuse' link. Email anti-spam experts recommend the use of private URL shorteners instead.
The folks at tinyurl are not your friends!

What we all should do is take the time to learn how to create an anchor tag:

<a href="REPLACE_THIS_WITH_LINK" target="_blank">DISPLAY_THIS_TEXT</a>

That's what I am using below.
