In Response To: Ethics (Phil Simborg)

Thanks for your response & input, Phil. You've given some great examples of "gray" ethical situations. I agree that thinking/pausing a while before turning a cube that is an insta-drop is fine...as you stated, it's simply eliminating a tell on your cubes.

I also do not see a problem with your scenario of reaching for the score sheet immediately after cubing your opponent, making him think it should be a pass when, in fact, it's a huge take. These are 2 good examples of what I call "bluffing" in BG. Although there is no "hidden information" in BG like there is in Poker, I believe this sort of "bluffing" (i.e., gamesmanship) is indeed ethical.

When playing a Poker cash-game w/ some strangers, it doesn't take long for the better players to identify the weaker ones...& then begin using totally legal tactics to take their $ and send them home. So, why should similar "misleading" tactics be viewed as unethical in BG??

To be clear, I do not use the methods described in my original post...and I never would, except maybe claiming that my success has been the result of lucky dice. Is that unethical if I know that my success is due to my opponent's inferior skill level? Maybe one could argue that it is unethical if the intent is to convince my opponent that we are equally matched & my lucky rolls are the reason why I'm ahead on the score sheet...or is it????

Here's my dilemma...I have a "friend" who plays $ games w/ Mr. R on a weekly basis. I have been present at many of these games, just as an observer. Mr. R is extremely wealthy and LOVES to gamble...he doesn't seem to care if he wins or loses...just loves the gamble. Mr. R is not a good BG player, but is convinced that he is a great player. My "friend" routinely uses these tactics against Mr. R.

My question is this: should I get involved in this situation at all? My friend is making a LOT of $ off of Mr. R and I'm sure he would like for that to continue. However, I feel like he is being unethical & taking advantage of Mr. R, although Mr. R doesn't seem to care...but he is obviously unaware that he is being played.

I want to do the right thing, whether that means staying out of the situation completely, or actually saying something to my "friend" about his ethics OTB.

I'm not sure what to do, if anything.
