Is pay to play the only way to hold tournaments?

It occurs to me that one of the differences between backgammon and chess may actually work in backgammon's favor here. Rating points are presumably based on actual results. The luck factor of backgammon means that when players lose, they may develop a strong conviction that their official rating underestimates their true playing strength. This feeling could motivate them to come back for more, to "set the record straight". Winners might not feel the same way, but the pleasant feeling that accompanies winning may be enough on its own to keep winners coming back for more.

I wonder if people who play online for rating points can confirm (or disconfirm!) the above phenomenon. Admittedly the barriers to playing online are so low that using online behavior to predict meatspace behavior may not be reliable.
