Is pay to play the only way to hold tournaments?

As I pointed out on this site a few weeks ago: I just started such a tournament series: Very low entry fee, play is mostly for the fun, and for rating points. It is a regional one day event, so that there are not many other costs. It attracted a lot of new players.

I think, we need both. The large tournaments can be a terrific experience. But they are not for the double digit PR masses. So, to popularize the idea of tournament backgammon, we might need many more low priced regional events. In addition to the ones we have.
