Is pay to play the only way to hold tournaments?

For years I have argued that the entry fees and costs for all but the top division should be very low. The TD can still cover his nut because of volume and with a simple $25 registration fee. Unless you are in the top division, this game should not be about money.
The result would be more people at tournaments and more people would attract sponsors which helps everyone. And eventually, all these people playing in the lower divisions will get the bug and improve their game and graduate to the higher divisions of play.
Even in the higher divisions, for most of us, we don't expect to turn a profit from tournament play. So even there I would rather see a lower entry fee and a bigger side pool for the gamblers.
At the same time, as much as I want to make the game more financially attractive for all, I still believe we need to make sure that our superstars, our Giants, have incentive to play and stay in the game. They add much to the game and they have worked hard to attain their status, and if we don't reward them, like many in the past, we will lose them to poker and other pursuits. So maybe some money needs to come out of the pot to subsidize our stars or to put a little more in the pot for them as well. Not sure how to structure this, but bottom line I am saying more money for the top levels of play and less money in both expenses and prizes at the lower levels.
Now, if you are going to get on a plane and get a hotel room and spend an entire weekend at a tournament, does it really matter that much if your entry fee is $250 or $100? Shouldn't make a difference, and remember, most of the entry fee is returned to the players in prizes, and in time you will get your fair share. That's also why I have argued for paying more places...so more people walk away happy...particularly in the non-Open divisions.
