AFAIK it's not a requirement to enter a main event at US ABT events. I've seen at least one brochure where the director charges a nominal fee if you play side events without playing in the main, and regardless, the polite thing to do would be to offer the director something even if that isn't a requirement.

Yes, there is still a fee, but compare to US ACBL (contract bridge, a typical comparison) Regional where there is no prize money but still nominal cost to enter events. (I think it's ballpark $20 for two sessions = 1 day of play.) And as Eric points out, ~80+% of your entry fee is returned to you, on average, if you choose events at your skill level.
