I've suggested before that one could try to follow the chess model. This wouldn't eliminate fees but would probably lower them. Instead of focusing on their ROI, players would be focused on improving their ratings and winning divisional trophies.

This approach, however, is controversial, and might not work, in part because of the differences between backgammon and chess.
