Let's assume the cost of getting caught cheating is the dead penalty.
what are the chances you get caught?
Are you going to check all the devices who are brought into a playing room before they are allowed to be used? In which case, I'd be ok with whatever stuff is getting into the playing room, including backgammon guru's disguised as dogs.
Seems we have forgotten the Lance Armstrong case. What Stick is saying sounds like he won't suspect a giant, if he plays a 2 but would order a cavity search if a noob happens to play a 3 in an important match. With all due respect to all tournament attendants, I haven't seen Mochy, Neil Kaz, MCG, Falafel or Gus or Jonas or whoever with a "real" record of success, using head-phones. And exactly these guys should come forward and regulate this game, like it is in chess. Robertie spoke up against headpones and explicitly warned against internet backgammon. How comes every parent would be proud of his son or daughter being a chess champion in the kindergarten, but would be ashamed if he/she would play in a 1$ chouette as a grown up? Get rid of this bad image.
I just want to emphasise, what I said in my other post: Think of it as a sacrifice for the good of the game. And keep the noise level down, please.
