I think your idea of several short matches could carry over to other contests. For example I was watching the Auburn vs Alabama football game yesterday and despite the game being close the first 3 quarters with lead changes and a lot of exciting plays was very boring for the first 3 quarters. I want to see plays that drastically change the expected win %. Why not 4 separate games lasting 15 minutes each?

There was a basketball league that did something like this. Winner of each quarter got a point in the standings and overall winner of the game was for another point.
