When are you too good to double in a match?

1. There is no formula. In a money game people say that since gammons are worth half as much as wins, if you win twice as many gammons as the number of games you lose, you are too good. that's not a bad "general rule" but what is more important is what can happen on the next roll.
2. If you are in a position where you win very few gammons, but there is absolutely no way that after the next roll your opponent could take the cube next time, then you are too good...you should roll and see what happens and then you can evaluate the situation on each roll.
3. What if there are a couple of rolls where he might be able to take next time (market gainers)? And what if there are some rolls that could even win him the game next time? You might still be too good depending on how many times you win a gammon, and of course, in a match, it also depends on the value of winning the gammon compared to the value of winning or losing the game.
Bottom line is there is no simple, sweeping formula, but you are always comparing your risk and reward for just one roll...the next roll...to make your decision.
I give a 1-2 hour lesson on this to my students and at the end of the lesson they ALL have a strong understanding of the concepts, however, it takes practice and follow up to hone this skill, and none of us have it perfected.
