Electronic Boards

I remember when I went to Germany in 1981 on a school exchange program, when I spent a lot of time playing the variety of chess computers (all pretty new back then) at the Kaufhoff (department store). The most expensive (the 'ARB' or Auto-Response Board, around £800) was a beautiful high end wooden chess set, with the addition of sensory technology underneath the wooden surface and inside the bottom of the pieces, such that moving the pieces was automatically detected and recorded (with some sort of near field communication electronics) for use by the inbuilt software unit under the board's surface. Just a tiny LED on each square and a small control panel to one side gave the game away. That was 33 years ago! A backgammon version could be built, so that the playing experience isn't really diminished.
