I was responding directly to Dmitriy, who used the term "master" rather than IM, but I'm glad you noted this anyway. I am not familiar with the FIDE system, but I'm going to assume you are right that it's so hard to get an IM title, that just playing below 5 in BG is indeed not comparable.

BTW, let me also note that I never got in shouting distance of any chess titles whatsoever. My main achievement in chess was playing an undefeated 3rd/4th board for two years for my high school in a county-based league. Back then, on the lower boards you could win most of your games in the opening, or just a few moves beyond it. I never had to prove whether or not I could stumble through a rook-and-pawn endgame or not, which was probably just as well!
