There is as much skill in poker as there is in backgammon, chess and most other games where both players have equal advantage. What matters in these games is not how good you are, but how much better you are than your opponents.
I know poker is skill because I have a friend who has made a good living grinding cards since 2003. He cashed in the main event this year and the one before it and he is an amazing player. The first piece of advice he gave me in poker was, "You are not as good as you think you are."
He is able to make his living playing cards because the skill gap between him and his opponents is so large. To do a similar feat in backgammon is much harder because it will be difficult to get consistent action from players considerably worse than you.
